Susan Coolen holds a BDes in Graphic Design from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, a BFA in Photography, Concordia University, Montreal and an MFA in Photography, Columbia College, Chicago.
Coolen's work has exhibited in galleries and public institutions/spaces in Canada, the USA and Europe, has been included in publications and is held in public collections. Notable public exhibits include ‘Shifting Sites’, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography [& its traveling exhibit in collaboration with The National Gallery of Canada], ‘The Language of Nature’ at the Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa, ‘Beyond Science’ in Barcelona, Spain, and ‘Grand Shadows’ and the commissioned thematic ‘Parochial Views' (Parlance No. 4) for the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery. Susan Coolen has been the Artist-in-residence for the City of Kitchener, Ontario and the Ayr Library, Waterloo Region, Ontario, with both projects generating new artist-book series grant-funded and held in public collections. Works from 1998-2008 can be seen on the online database: The Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art.
